The NWS's primary forecast model for the one to two week period is the GFS. The GFS has been forecasting extreme heat for the plains for next week. The featured chart is a forecast for 4 PM air temperatures next Friday (22nd). Temperatures slightly above 100 degrees are analyzed for some parts of Iowa with values pushing 110+ degrees over Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. It will be interesting to see if this forecast verifies as it currently is getting a lot of attention due to potential impacts to crop production.
