2016 Precip Ineffectiveness

Posted: 10 Jun 2016 05:00 AM

Widespread precipitation has been difficult to come by in Iowa recently. The featured chart is a bit complex, but attempts to show the percentage of Iowa that has gotten a half inch of rain during a day and that that has not received that amount in total over the past seven days. The coincident area of these two metrics is then shown in the bottom chart. The top panel shows that only two days in the past three months have seen over a quarter of the state covered by such a rainfall event. The bottom chart shows the dry periods that have accumulated over each of the past three months. And now with significant heat here for the next few days, the impacts from the lack of rain will become greater.
