Cold, but not that extreme

Posted: 16 May 2016 05:34 AM

Temperatures were a bit chilly this past weekend for Iowa in mid May. Sub freezing temperatures were observed over limited portions of northern Iowa. Having such cool temperatures in May is not out of the ordinary. The featured chart displays daily temperatures, climatologies, and departures expressed in units of sigma for Des Moines. A one standard deviation departure (one sigma) on the downside was all that this weekend amounted to and our time at this extremity has been limited this year if you compare with the amount of time we have spent on the 1 and 2+ sigma positive side of average. Temperature moderation is expected this week with a slow creep back to the 80s by next week.
