Still warm soils

The featured chart displays the climatology of four inch soil temperatures as measured by the ISU sensor located near Ames. This year's time series is highlighted along with the 32 degree freezing level. Soil temperatures have been well above long term average this fall and this is important when considering the storm system impacting the state today. Warm soil temps help to mitigate what otherwise would be significant freezing rain events. This also provides a heat source for pavement surfaces to help them fight frozen precipitation.
