The featured chart looks at precipitation ranks when computed from a period to today or from the first of the year to a given date. For a period from 1 May to 8 Oct, this year is the driest on record for the period. While the rains of August helped short term deficits (top chart), they did not change the year to date ranks (bottom chart). There are actually some chances of rain in the forecast! Hopefully they start a process on making up these deficits.
