Unofficial/preliminary data computed by the IEM.
The featured chart presents three measures of how cold it has been this month for Des Moines. So far the maximum temperature reported was a mere 35 degrees, which is easily the lowest value for the month during previous years on record. Considering the simple daily average of high and low temperature, this month only ranks 30th coldest and a full 13 degrees warmer than 1936! Then finally, only considering the lowest temperature reported, this month only ranks 38th coldest out of 118 years. The moral of the story is that our exceptional snow pack and many cloudy nights have helped to keep temperatures in a tight range, with highs typically below freezing and lows not tremendously cold.
