Severely Active

Posted: 18 Jun 2009 06:11 AM

The lack of severe weather was featured three weeks ago in relation to the large VORTEX2 research project underway to observe near tornado environments. The featured image shows the daily number of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings issued by the NWS since the 10th May (when VORTEX2 began). The field project ended for the year on the 13th of June and you can see how severe weather activity has increased since then! The key in this image are the number of tornado warnings (in red) and the lack of them during the project duration. The next two days look extremely active with Iowa expected to widespread severe weather.
