6 AM 850hPa plot on 2 Nov 2006
The featured map is of temperatures and winds on the 850 hPa pressure surfacewhich is approximately 4,000 feet above ground level. The plotted stations depict observed wind, air temperature (upper left), and dew point depression (lower left) in Celsius. The sunshine heats the ground causing air to mix from the surface upwards in the atmosphere. The 850 hPa temperature can provide guidance on potential near surface temperatures as this air mixes down to the ground. A rule of thumb is to add 13 degrees to the 850 hPa temperature. With colder temperatures around (-8 to -13) advecting into the state today, that would place our temperatures barely above 0 (mid 30s Fahrenhit).
