Peak wind gusts (in knots) on 24 Jan 2006
Anybody that was fortunate enough to be outside yesterday experienced the strong northwest wind. Gusts approached 50 and even 60 miles per hour over much of the state. These extreme gusts were a result of very strong downward motion in the atmosphere on the backside of a deepening low pressure system to our east. The downward motion brought very gusty and dry air from aloft to the surface. Yesterday's news item has more details on the event.
