Sharp Contrasts

Posted: 24 Aug 2005 06:54 AM

IEM rainfall departure estimates for 2005 show quite a contrast over just about 100 km in Eastern Iowa. The dark blue areas are running about 6+ inches above normal and the dark red areas are about 6+ inches below normal. Sometimes these sharp contrasts are reinforced by the weather as new storms tend to redevelop over areas with wetter surfaces and then dissipate as they move over the drier areas. Regardless, it is getting too late into the season to make up deficit for crops in far Eastern Iowa. The damage has been done.
