Downslope winds

A strong westerly wind yesterday brought warmer air into Iowa. Temperatures soared into the low 40s where there was little snow on the ground. The warmth of the air was due to its path down the lee side of the Rocky Mountains. As you may recall from sixth grade science, air warms when it is compressed by descending down the mountain.
